Solstice

Skywatch

It's here ... the longest day of the year.

Today, June 20th, marks the longest day of the year
in the Northern Hemisphere.

Solstice Sigh

The sun today won’t take a hint,

It lingers long, with golden glint.

But I, moon-minded, seek the night,

With silver beams and softer light.

Let others praise this sunlit spree—

I’ll wait for dusk to comfort me.

For when the daylight starts to wane,

The moon and stars shall rise again.

Let's celebrate the moon. 😘

Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice
June 20, 2025

I saw this poster advertised in the Old Farmer's Almanac and fell in love with it immediately. It's been up on my wall since early this year. It's a delightful way to see the lunar phases all year long. I double checked a few days with TimeAndDate.com and it's right on.

Critters and Stamps

It's especially fun when 2 hobbies align ... interest in wildlife and stamp collecting.  How do you like these First Day Covers from the 1981 American Wildlife series of US Postage stamps? Which one is your favorite? ...

Polar Bear

In 1981 first class postage in the United States was 18 cents from March to November. Each stamp above is 18 cents, and the postal cancel mark was added at Boise, Idaho.

One of my favorite "critter" stamps is the Forever issued in 2011 for Oweny, the Postal Service Dog.

Before we leave the Critter department, a couple of recent shots of my hummers ...

Afternoon snack time.

Hummingbirds belong to the family Trochilidae,
which contains around 366 different species.
My hummers are known as Anna's.

On the Water

On an early, sunny morning, the Royal Caribbean
Anthem of the Seas arrives in Seattle.

After the ship docks, I put the binoculars on the ship.
Yes, the big screen is correct.  😊

From the Archives ...

I am so disappointed in my Government and the way they have been treating my favorite neighboring country:  Canada. To my many fellow bloggers in Canada ... one thing I know for sure ... Most Americans love Canada as I do.

September 13, 2009, I visited Peace Arch Park
on the US/Canada border north of Seattle.
The arch is an impressive sight with these words:
Children of a Common Mother

Closing thought from Farmer Frank found in the Old Farmer's Almanac ...

“I talk to the sun when I need sun. I talk to the clouds when I need clouds, and the rain, and the moon and the stars, I talk to all of Mother Nature’s creations. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t, but at least they know my intentions."

Farmer Frank

Thanks for stopping by John's Island and a happy Summer to you. (Or Winter, if you're down South
😊)

Linking up with Eileen's Saturday's Critters. Check it out!

  1. Happy summer solstice. And thanks for the chart -- it's comprehensive, everything including astrology.

  2. As always, John, your post is a delight, filled with eclecticism, and in this case a very welcome expression of your warm feelings for Canada and its people. Thanks for this. It is important to differentiate the enduring friendship between citizens and the current batch of scurrilous politicians. Once again I am entranced by your first day covers. What a fabulous collection you have. Most of all perhaps I continue to marvel at your poetic prowess. Many of us write piffle and doggerel from time to time, but your verse is emerging as polished, accomplished and evocative. Bravo, John! Please keep versifying so that we can all enjoy it. A la prochaine, mon ami - David

  3. ...I know that hummingbirds visit our feeder and flowers, but they are hard to see. Let's hope that when the current administration is in the dusty bin of history that our friendship with Canada can be renewed. Be well, John.

  4. Thank you for this lovely post, John. You start with a poem, which I am usually graced with when you comment on my blog. And the stamps are just wonderful. You have hit another home run here, and I am grateful for you. I also love Canada and am sorry for the way my government has treated the country. Blessings to all and happy times ahead, I hope.

  6. Farmer Frank is a wise man.

What most Canadians are feeling towards the U.S. right now has nothing to do with the majority of Americans. The American Government has awakened Canadian patriotism however. We can be thankful for that.

I will always want to stay in contact with American friend, like you, John.

  10. I love that beautiful lunar calendar too. The art on it is lovely. Nice to see the hummers. We see lots of butterflies here but not as many hummingbirds...from my observation. Enjoy your weekend! And thanks again for always being such a wonderful friend...a friend that is talented enough to write poetry! Hugs, Diane

  11. Hello John, what a great post and I enjoy your poem too. Happy Summer to you! I love the long sunny days, but I love seeing the moon too. Great captures of your hummingbirds. They are a treat for the eyes. The Lunar Calendar wheel and the Almanac poster are delights. I love all the wildlife stamps, bears tend to be my favorites. I still love all the animals. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

  13. I had a friend who collected every first-day cover issued by the USPS! So I like them a lot (I had a few myself).
Happy summer! Our days are very long right now, but obviously will begin shrinking today.

  14. I like that you call them “my hummers”! That is a wonderful series of first cover stamps and in every case if there is a bear of any kind in any group of photos, the bear will always grab the most attention from me!

The words and actions of one person cannot divide us! Americans & Canadians forever friends!

  15. Hi John! This was a pretty delightful read (and welcome diversion) on a hot Sunday morning here in Pittsburgh. Enjoyed your prose as always, loved the lunar poster and critter stamps too. 18 cents to mail a first class letter.. sigh! Good to see a new post from you and hope your week ahead is full of equally good things. 🙂🙏

  16. Precious friend John I wish I can write my comment in poetry as you do but I am not that talented or much creative like you so I will choose my simple words to express my emotions.
I love how you leave comments in poetic way on all blogs you visit.it’s really amazing and impressive honestly!!!
Your poem about sunlight is enchanting and beautiful 👍🥰

Despite our summer sun looks like cruel monster I love living in part of land where I can see the sun everyday 🙏
Sunlight for me is truly a special gift that keeps me energetic and active in daily life. Departure from sun makes me dull and depressed if stretched long.

Solstice wheale poster is wonderful 🤗

I also very enjoyed the critters posters 👍🥰♥️

I can relate to your sadness about US president behaviour regarding Canada! Because such behaviour of his is affecting the most of the world these days sadly.
Peace park photos from previous visit are gorgeous 👌

I absolutely loved the quote and I totally agree to it because I believe that nature has most sensitive way to sense our intentions and don’t need our thoughts or actions to feel or determine anything. She encompasses our selves and sense our true intentions and that is enough for me 🥰🙏

Health, peace of happiness to you and yours my friend 🙏

Those hummingbird shots are just magical.
Loved the lunar poster and critter stamps too.

    Happy Thursday!

  19. Love the lunar calendar, John. Hummingbirds are such fascinating creatures and the many species are so colorful. I was not interested in birds when I lived in Arizona in the 1960s, so of course did not notice the hummingbirds, although there are 17 species that live there. A friend who moved to southern Arizona and is a photographer occasionally posts pictures of them on Facebook. How do you get such clear images of your first-day stamps? You'll have to let me know over lunch sometime. I always read your blog on the big screen PC so I can appreciate them more. My favorite wildlife stamp? I love them all.

I've just dropped in to visit and thank you for the lovely poem you wrote on my post a few weeks back, I really enjoyed and appreciated it. 😊 I've also enjoyed today's post, the stamps humming birds and the tug photos. My brother works on a pilot boat but not on the Alaska coast, on Otago Harbour in NZ. I also liked that poster, I reckon my husband would enjoy that too. Have a good day.
