USA Road Trip 1941

Two school teachers from Litchfield, Connecticut, travelled over 11,000 miles on a road trip to the West Coast in 1941.  Thanks to the memory book Charlotte created after their return home, we are able to revisit their trip some 70+ years later.

The newspaper misspelled Anne's last name.  That is, we believe
her travelling companion, Charlotte, probably knew the
correct spelling (as shown in her note
inside the front cover).

I'll bet even Charlotte and Anne would like to see

Tower of Light

Dawn on January 2 revealed gray skies over the Emerald City.  Somewhat unusual, though:  Aspira Apartments Tower looking like a lighthouse.  A break in the overcast must have been aligned just perfectly with the rising sun to allow the tower, with large glass windows, to send a bright light our way.

Starting Year 4

3- to 4-Year-Olds: Developmental Milestones

Congratulations, you have survived the "terrible two's!"  Hopefully, you have energy left to enjoy what lies ahead for you and your preschooler. They call the next few years the "magic years" -- partly because it seems like magic that your child is finally listening to you and partly because for your child, it is a time for his or her imagination to run wild. 

Your 3- to 4-year-old child will continue to grow and develop in many ways in the coming year. Although children reach developmental milestones at different times, your child will likely achieve the following developmental milestones before he or she turns 5 years old. 

3- to 4-Year-Old Development: Language Milestones

If your child is not very talkative, that will likely change soon. At  3 to 4 years old, your child should be able to: 

Say his or her name and age
Speak 250 to 500 words
Answer simple questions
Speak in sentences of five to six words, and speak in complete sentences by age 4
Speak clearly
Tell stories

Here at John's Island, as the blog enters the 4th year, we hope to live up to some of those same milestones. We will just have to see. We were just looking back at one of our first posts, January 1, 2011, and, yes, that is still one of our favorite photos.  So, today, we are sharing another sunrise.  Today's is a shot taken in the mountains of southwest Montana.  We loved the "Japanese Flag" effect of the sunlight.  It seems like a nice sunrise photo is a good way to celebrate "new beginnings" for the new year. On New Year's Eve tradition here at John's Island requires opening up this antique cylinder music box and playing a few cycles of Auld Lang Syne.  We thought we should share it this year with our loyal followers and friends.
