Trains ... 70 Years Ago

For fellow railfans, June is a good month to look back 70 years to the cover of Popular Mechanics magazine when they featured one of our favorite passenger trains, the Olympian, in the Rocky Mountains. From our collection of railroad memorabilia ...

Spelling

The National Spelling Bee has just been completed. Congratulations to winner Ananya Vinay! The Bee inspired Google to come up with the map below based on searches on their website. How did your state do? It amused us that Washington and Maine missed the same word!

Postcards for the Weekend #39 - Country Map(s)

Maria, of Postcards for the Weekend, has challenged us to come up with a postcard to share which features a "country map." With a smile, here we go ...

A Pike Street Press postcard which expresses our feelings quite well.

PS  We actually mailed this card to Maria a while back!

Closing thought ...

  5. Hi John, welcome back to the link-up! I'm so glad to see that the card you sent me is up this weekend. :D Until now, my Seattle trip is elusive! But hopefully, one day soon ... Love the full flower moon, all the marine sighting photos, and the map of most misspelled word per country in the USA. Have a nice weekend!

  6. Beautiful photos, thank you for sharing, John!
    I like these interesting maps.

And I love the closing thought - I never had thought of the connection between the two of them before, but it is so true..

    1. Hi Heleen, Thank you for your comment! The practice of using a closing thought is more challenging than I expected it to be. I'm trying to find quotes that I haven't seen over and over. This one really struck me. Like you, I had never thought of the connection before. Recently, when out and around, I've been watching and it's fascinating to see how people are using their "smartphones." It seems like an addiction. And, of course, smartphones are simply a small computer you can carry around easily. I wonder if Steve Jobs realized what he was creating. :-)

    1. Hi Michelle, I always appreciate your comments. The day I snapped that photo was sunny and warm ... a perfect time for sail away. It looked like just about every passenger was out to enjoy the event.

  8. You must be a very early riser as all the ship times are before 6:00 AM! Those kids would beat me in a hurry when it comes to spelling.

  9. Fantastic pictures. You know I enjoy the ships and the rails, but it is the mountains that win over all the others.Of course the sunsets and the moon shimmering on the water, are all great.

    1. Hi Ruth, Thank you so much for all the kind words! Knowing your excellent photography makes your comments on the pictures all the more encouraging to me. I always look forward to your comments. By the way, I've been a little slow in blogging the past few months. I lost my only sister in March and my Father-in-Law about two weeks ago. They both had long lives but were in ill health before passing. Still, it was a setback and I miss them. Then, family from Texas visited in April and that took me away from the computer for a while. I do hope to get back to posting a little more often and the comments I received today have been a real boost. Thanks again, Ruth, for stopping by and have a great weekend.

    2. I am so sorry to hear of the losses in your life.Even when a person is ill, saying that final good-bye here on earth is not easy.I must admit that I have missed your regular posts, but I also understand that sometimes other things take priority.

  14. I sort of envy you having those huge container ships cruising by your city. They fascinated me the one time I got to see them. We don't get such container vessels through the Great Lakes, but I still like to watch the ships with steel, ore, grains coming into the port.
Your postcard is cute - showing love for your corner of the country!
