Alpenglow

A dear friend posted, on Facebook, the tapestry below describing new words to refer to certain kinds of unusual light.

Art by Grant Snider

Her post struck me because, at the moment I read her post, I happened to look out my window to the Olympic Mountains in the distance. "Alpenglow:  rosy light on mountain peaks at dawn or dusk." It was like a bingo moment ... alpenglow was on perfect display. This kind of thing encourages me to think more positively about social media. 😊 What a coincidence!

February 15th shortly after sunrise

And a sunset a few days later caused me to wonder what name we should apply to the glow in the sky. What are your suggestions?

February 19th

I found 30 descriptive words in "How to Describe a Sunset in Writing" here.

  1. You did extremely well with your alpenglow photo. I spent much time hiking in the Rockies so had the pleasure of many alpenglow evenings.

  2. Here I am, John, and yes, I was familiar with that alpenglow phenomenon but only ut of books. I love your blogpost. Occasionally, we catch glimpses of iridescent clouds here during winter. What's interesting is that my husband doesn't see them (the iridescence), but I do. It must have something to do with his eyes. Also, thank you for sharing the fascinating link on how to describe a sunset.

I'm at a loss for words when it comes to describing the clouds I see in your photo: a sunset with an enchanting reflection of colors, that's for sure. There's a certain magic to it. Is it a winter sunset? Then I would describe it as a dreamy winter sunset with a gentle reflection.

I hope you have a great rest of the week. It's nice to connect with each other through the blog.

  3. Hello,
Love the beautiful photos and sky. Alpenglow is a perfect descriptive word for the first view of the mountains and sky. The clouds in the second photo really make the sunset colorful and stunning. Take care, have a great day!

  8. That tapestry is so cute! I always try to find words to describe, in my own way, what I am seeing. Your alpenglow photo and your sunset photo are both beautiful. Sometimes there are no words to describe the beauty!
