Sunset Joy

Isn't photography a fun hobby? It just keeps on entertaining us. Here are 10 of our photos taken on November 27, 2015 ... a gorgeous, clear, cold day in the Northwest. [Please click on pics for larger view.]

Mid-day we enjoyed the sight of a Matson container ship arriving in Elliott Bay, aka Port of Seattle. Our main reason for posting this photo is to show you the clear blue skies on this day. That was the setup for what we expected to be a sweet sunset so we decided to walk to Kerry Park, a good spot to catch the sun dropping below the horizon.

A clear afternoon in Seattle had us looking forward to a chance
for capturing a nice sunset later. In this photo a Matson container
ship is arriving in Port.

We walked up to Kerry Park to capture the sunset.

It was kind of surprising to find out how many other folks had the same idea to go to Kerry Park. Of course, this is "THE" spot for an overlook photo of downtown Seattle. While we were most interested in the actual sunset, it looked like most of the photographers wanted to capture the sunset glow on the skyline of the city. For those of you who are not familiar with Seattle, if you ever visit and take one of those "tour bus" outings to see the highlights of the city, they will probably stop here and let you take a look and/or your own photos.

In the photo above, it appears that the lady near the center is holding a large scope to her eye, but the scope is actually behind her and she is trying to capture the scene with her smartphone camera. The photo below shows the scene most of the photographers seemed interested in capturing. That "bump" on the right side is Mt Rainier (14,410 feet in height), about 50 miles to the south of the city, adding its beauty to the scene on this clear evening.

Smartphone captures worked for many.
We thought this was a pretty good crowd of watchers and
photographers.

A few of the more "serious" photographers.

We snapped this to show you that thing in the sky right in the center.
Can you see it up above the trees? Looks like a bird or ...

It's a drone. Bet they got some great shots of the city on this day.
Wish there was a way to know if they will post their pics online.
Would like to see what they got!
On the other hand, it does seem like a lot of liability
to fly a drone over a crowd like this, doesn't it?

We will close this post with this last pic we took of the sunset.
We thought it turned out pretty good ... how do you like it?
Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. Yes, I do like it. We have actually seen the sun a lot more than usual during this time of the year, don't you think? It's gone now, though. :-)

Seeing all those photographers reminds me one time I was walking around the lake. Photographers all lined up getting their cameras set just right. I come walking by with my point and shoot. Stop take a picture and continue on. : )

  16. If you stare at the last photo - it is quite hypnotizing. The colors are very strong.

I'd stand near the serious photographers...they always know where the better spot is :)

Mobile phones of course are very convenient. It's light and you can take a shot of anything you at the moment. But I guess it's a bit downgrading the value of photographs. I am guilty of it.

Thanks again for leaving nice words on my blog. I understand what you mean. I do get motivated too when I know that the readers really read my posts and not just comment :) It's nice to exchange real words in a virtual world.

  17. Hello Mr.John; So sorry for my belated comment.
Beautiful sunset and I love the color; sweet to see many people enjoying it♪ I was impressed to read about the lady holding a large scope, quite interesting:-)
To answer your question; Yes, that high way is for cars. And for very small country with lots of mountains, we have so many tunnels as well.
    Sincerely from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
