Having fun at Cortland Du Rand Big Elk Ranch Martinsdale, Montana |
"Where guests ride swimming Buffalo ..." We're not sure if we would do that or not. How about you? This old card from our postcard collection is probably pretty rare. A Google search for "Cortland Du Rand Big Elk Ranch" has no results. Our guess on publishing date ... 1920s or 30s.
Thank you for stopping by John's Island.
I will pass on riding a swimming buffalo! lol
ReplyDeleteMarketing science clearly wasn't well evolved for these folks. chortle
ReplyDeleteWell, the postcard survived the decades, but I guess not much else did. Very interesting, John. :-)
ReplyDeleteJohn, that sounds too bizarre for words! Why would anyone even want to ride a stinky old buffalo?
ReplyDeleteGood question Linda Kay! : - ) Maybe if the buffalo were regular swimmers they didn't stink so much??? Ha Ha
DeleteI wouldn't wish to ride a buffalo...swimming or otherwise. This is quite something, John! :)
ReplyDeletehmmm. sure hope those animals were well-treated even if made to do weird things.
ReplyDeleteHi Tex, Sure agree ... hope all animals are well treated! This kind of thing reminds me of rodeo type stuff ... you know, riding bulls, racing horses around barrels, etc. There is possible disagreement on whether that is good treatment. Like the card says, It was "the only place like it in the world." Wish we had more info on it!
DeleteTo me that sounds like a lot of fun :)
ReplyDeleteIf you fall down you don't hurt yourself :))
Have a fine day

I think not. : )
ReplyDeleteRide a swimming buffalo... Ok, I am just going to say it. Those old west people were a lot braver than us modern folks. I read that and the only thing I could think is today NO ONE would offer that because of the insurance liability! :-) We are a safe people, but sadly we will never ride a swimming buffalo.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that they would never get away with that today. I've swum horses through deep water and it feels very safe as they fell like strong swimmers.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I would ride a buffalo but I sure did like this card.
ReplyDeleteI think my daughter would ride on a Buffalo. And I would make a photo ...
ReplyDeleteInteresting.. I would rather enjoy just seeing the buffalo and elk in their natural habitat.. wild & free.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a strange and wild ranch to visit. I've seen buffalo at Jacob's Well in Kansas and don't think they'd take affably to being ridden! I have enough trouble just staying on a horse!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like people in the 40s would do anything to get paying customers! :-) Like ostrich races...you name it! :-)
