Take a Spin [1914]

This old card doesn't fit into the main categories of our collection of old postcards, but we liked the image despite the solemn correspondence. Mailed in May, 1914, just over 100 years ago.

How about it ... Can you imagine getting an invitation for your first ride in one of the first automobiles?

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. What is hard to imagine is getting this notice on a post card. The card reminds me of Hummels.

  2. When I think of how much our correspondence options have changed in a century, I guess it wasn't too unusual to learn about a death via postcard back then. Now it would be on Facebook. :-)

  4. re: robot ver... no financial consideration that i'm aware of.

you do know that, as a blogger user, you can skip the word verification/robot click box altogether and just publish your comment like normal, don't you? it is only folks who use open i.d. (wordpress, typepad users, etc.) that are forced to use it. something about google and their changes to security are 'penalizing' non-google i.d. users and not recognizing their ids like before.

  7. Imagine getting such news on a postcard. My grandma (my husband's side) kept lots of letters from years gone by. She had several with news of someone passing. They were sent in envelopes with black around the edges. I suppose that way you would know what kind of news it was before you opened the letter.

The little guy on this card is cute. Is he supposed to be speaking English with a foreign accent? Von't you take a spin midt me? :)

  8. Neat postcards John. Interesting that people used them as funeral notices. I love to collect postcards but only have the newer ones when we have been away anywhere. Your vintage postcards are great!

  10. It is a cute little post card. I still remember sending a lot of post cards. Now I only send them to Africa to show the people what it looks like over where I live or symbols like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or the beaver and maple leaf :-)
