Blue Skies in Cowtown [1960s]

From our collection of old postcards ...

Blue sky and sunshine "deep in the heart of historic downtown Cowtown, Fort Worth, Texas." This card features a photo taken by John A. Stryker published by Western Fotocolor in (guessing) early 1960s.

Now that it is so easy to research things on the WWW, we looked up John A. Stryker and discovered that his photography is featured in a collection at Texas State University. You can read about Mr. Stryker and the collection here.

Enlarged info from back of the card ...

Linking up this historic blue sky with SkyWatch Friday -- Thanks to the SkyWatch hosts!

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. In the 1960s, I worked for a short time in one of those old buildings, but I don't remember which one. My parents retired in Fort Worth. I love the old cars, they bring back such memories. :-)

  3. John, Fort Worth is an awesome city, in my opinion. There is a huge variety of interesting museums, a zoo, and the Stockyards, where they run the longhorns down the street twice a day. It is definitely a cowboy town, and so different from Dallas, right next door.

  4. My guess for the date of the picture is 1958 based on the cars and the fact that the clock on the CNB building was installed in 1957. At one time the clock was the largest revolving clock in the world. Brings back memories. It would be neat if you had a postcard of Topsy's diner. It was a unique building.

  11. This post is so nostalgic. I remember receiving post cards from my father when I was little. Long before the era of the internet.

  15. I first didn't believe that there was a place called Cowtown! And then it doesn't look like there are any cows at all! How did this place get this name? To me Cowtown more sounds like a sleepy country town where time somehow stood still.

  17. I agree with a few other commenters here--sweet to see those vintage rides! Looking through old slides on a projector with my folks they had some beauties back in the day as well--too bad they didn't keep them!
