Great Northern's Greatest Train [1964]

From our collection of old travel memorabilia, an advertising brochure featuring the Empire Builder, a transcontinental train serving passengers between Chicago and Seattle. We believe this was published in 1964.

A few enlargements follow ...

Remember those "movie" cameras from the 60s?

John loves steaks so this looks pretty good to him.

Do you enjoy travelling this much?

A "sleeper" is great for overnight trips!

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  2. I enjoyed our train trip to Halifax many years ago. I enjoyed to sit on the Dome on top. That was nice.

Night I hated it. The train guys travel so fast. It made me ill.

I guess they have to make it clock time but it was too fast compared to the day time driving they did. It really has turned me off for traveling. On trains. I think to go back time like your pictures. Would be fine with me. The dinning I can not say enough of the service and the waiter. First class.

    1. Hi Carolann, I don't usually comment on comments but thought I would on this one. Your comments about travel by train are well taken. Although I consider myself a "railfan" (one who loves trains) there is no doubt that today's travel on AMTRAK in the USA is a far cry from the service on trains in the era I love to honor in my collection of travel memorabilia. There are a few private rail trips in the USA now ... and they are like the old days ... but they are too expensive, in my opinion. Perhaps someday in the future, traveler’s disgust with airline travel will create enough business for private rail to once again become a great way to move around our country. Thanks for your comment.

  3. Go figure Amtrak has failed to flourish. (I can remember the last time I priced a fair...it was more than the same flight would cost. In this hurry hurry world, that makes it hard to compete, eh)

    1. Regal is an excellent word to describe this train travel.

  9. Train travel was a great style although there were regular passenger trains which weren't so luxurious. I wish air travel came even close to this.

  10. Hello greetings and good wishes.

Fantastic photos. I wish I could travel in this super train, looks very comfortable with excellent service.

I regularly travel in trains in India, which is overcrowded, even reserved compartments will be occupied by passengers who have no reservation during day time and service is pathetic.

    Best wishes.

  11. John, this is so exciting! I would have loved to have traveled on this train! I love trains but don't get to take one very often. Here in Montreal we have the commuter double decker trains, but of course, there is no dining car as the trips on these trains are short. I think I shared a video on one of my blog posts quite sometime ago about a dining train. I am sure that such a trip would be magical. Thanks so much for sharing these gems, I really love your posts. :)

  12. I sure wish I would have something like this sleeper for my air travels! If I could only afford first class. And yes, I remember those old movie cameras from the 60s! :-)

  13. This really makes a train ride worthwhile! Not only do you get all the comfort and great food (I assume) but also the most magnificent views as well.
