Summer Solstice 2015

One of our interests is astronomy. How about you ... Are you interested in the sun, moon, planets, and stars? The one thing in the universe that affects our planet Earth the most is our sun. Today is the day of Summer Solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere). At the risk of oversimplification let's just say this:  The length of daylight will start getting shorter after today as we head to the Winter Solstice in December.

An interesting site explaining all this is Time and Date. Here is a screen shot taken today ...

Check out the Time and Date website here.

Our old postcard today is one we've posted before. It's one of a series of 4 cards ... one for each season ... published by S. Porter in Chicago in about 1906.

Wishing you a fine season ahead. Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  6. It always amazes me that the days start getting shorter already when summer first starts.

  8. I wonder what our world would look like if Earth stayed perpendicular to the sun. Shallower oceans. Hotter equator. Always frozen poles. No seasons. Be like Florida everywhere.

  9. Happy Summer to you John. I am interested in the sky and planets etc but am afraid I am not too informed about it all. Just one more thing I haven't had time to study, lol. Good thing there is always so much to keep one interested in life. Happy Summer ahead to you and yours.

  10. Hi John, Summer Solstice always brings a little bit of sadness with it. I love the long days of Spring and Summer and hate to see them fade away. I can not imagine living in a place like Alaska in the winter . . . the dark would drive me crazy. Oh, the answer to your question, not Ellensburg, but Moses Lake.

  13. I usually don't pay very much attention to astronomy, but summer starting is always a good time of year. Actually my aunt just gave us a telescope she bought when my cousins were young.

I wasn't able to find the exact recipe for bean soup that my mother uses (I have it somewhere--but where is a good question); here is more or less the original recipe-book version she bases her soup on:
1 lb beans, 12 cups cold water, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 cups diced celery, 1 cup minced onion, 1 minced garlic clove, 1/2 tsp. pepper, 1 tsp. dried marjoram, 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley or 2 tbsp. dried parsley. Boil beans and simmer till they're just about ready. Stir in other ingredients and keep cooking until done.

love when the sun shines :))
Love those teddybears doing a typical
summer thing. Hope they're catching any :))
