North to Alaska 2018 (3)

Click here for my Introductory Post

Tracy Arm

Once again, I'm not your typical cruiser. Here's another example: While most folks like to "sleep in" I like to be up early, step out onto the Promenade Deck for a breath of fresh air, and then head up to the Lido Market (restaurant) to get a good table, write in my journal, people watch, and see the morning activities unfold.

Each morning on the way to breakfast I passed the
Naturalist's Desk in the main lobby. Every day the Naturalist filled a
white board with something interesting, like you see
above ... Animal of the Day, Humpback whale.

Ready for a good cup of coffee in the Lido Market
The breakfast menu includes many, many options!

Spotted an Alaska Marine Highway vessel (ferry) heading South.
You can take your car with you to Alaska on a ferry like this which
departs from Bellingham, Washington.

Today we are heading into Tracy Arm

Two things about this photo:
1. Be sure to bring proper clothing. It can be cold out on deck!
2. Like the lady, you can use an cell phone for pictures,
but you really need something with good optical zoom!

Typical photographers lined up to catch the views.

Out on the bow ... it is cold and windy on this day. The weather in
Alaska is changeable! Rain is common, so is cold and windy.
On this day it has been raining off and on.

Getting close to the end of Tracy Arm.
Just a glimpse of Sawyer Glacier can be seen on the left.

The Captain says this is as close as we will get today.
He is worried about icebergs.

Zoomed in on Sawyer Glacier.
What an amazing field of ice. It is hard
to appreciate this until you see it in person!

  2. Exquisite views!

But that deck shot reminds me of Titanic and I want to rush everyone to the lifeboats while singing that Celine Dion song!

    1. Thanks, Sandi! I have to smile ... yes, the Titanic is probably in the back of all mariner's minds. Thankfully, this voyage was without any unhappy events. :-)

    1. Thanks, Bill! Yes, there is definitely luck involved in how much of the glaciers will be seen. A lot depends on the weather and how many icebergs are floating around. Our Captain did an amazing job of maneuvering around several!

  4. John, another marvelous post. It looks like you are having a ball . . . you're in your element :) The whiteboard with the Humpback information was very interesting. I clicked on your photos to blow them up and they are incredible, especially the ones of Sawyer Glacier. I am so happy that you are able to take this trip . . . enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! We never know how much healthy time we have left on this amazing planet and I think that we are truly blessed when we can look beyond the busy world and look deep into the beauty of it all.
Wishing you a safe and happy trip.
Thanks for sharing it with us,
    Connie :)

    1. Thanks Red! You are so right ... it is a process of slowly easing a way up the fjord. Our Captain did an amazing job of maneuvering around icebergs to get us pretty close to the glacier. I have some even more amazing photos for you when we get to Hubbard Glacier in a few days.

  9. Hi, John!
I've never been in a cruiser, and I'm not sure that I'd like this type of holidays. But I'm enjoying a lot your pictures. I also pay a lot of attention to manoeuvres when travelling by boat!
Alaska seems a dream to me.
    Thanks for sharing the pictures!

    1. Hi Eva!
Great to hear from you! Wow, I received an excellent postcard from you during the summer and shame on me for taking so long to send a reply! :-) One will be coming you way soon ... I wonder if you are still in Spain ... I will check your blog where I'll probably find the answer. Anyway, thank you for your comments here. I do hope you will think seriously about seeing Alaska one of these days. I'll bet you would love it! If you don't want to do a cruise I would recommend a land tour to see Mount Denali, highest mountain peak in North America. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denali I hope you had a great summer in Spain! More later! Take good care and have a great day!

    2. I'll be living in Spain from now on, so no problem: write when you wish to!

On the back of the postcard I sent to you this summer there is my new address (I don't want to publish it here, sorry).
