The U.S. Approves a Vaccine

Lately I have been wondering how things are going to look on the other side. Of course I'm talking about the pandemic. So far, if you're curious like me, you've read the history on the previous major pandemic to hit America, the Spanish flu, in 1918 - 1919. The Spanish flu killed about 50 million people worldwide. Over time, those who contracted the virus developed an immunity to the novel strand of influenza, and life returned to "normal" by the early 1920s, according to historians and medical experts. So, 2, 3 or 4 years, way back then, HOWEVER they did not have a "warp speed" vaccine. We do and it is being distributed TODAY for the first time in the USA. So, we have a new element to consider in the resolution of our current chaos.

This morning I listened to The Daily Podcast. (about 33 minutes ... link below) I found the show so enlightening I thought I should share it here on the blog.

  1. I listen to The Daily almost every day. I've got a three-mile walk scheduled for later today, and I'll listen to it then. I hope more people get turned on to that podcast, John. It's always informative and well researched. But then again, it's from the NYT and would be expected to be factual. :-)

  3. What a change in one hundred years. It took nine months to develop this vaccine. What will another 100 years bring?

  4. I think the vaccine thing is over hyped. It will take a long time to roll this out. It will take a long time to vaccinate people . Meanwhile the pandemic rolls on. Sorry to be so negative.

    1. I don't think you are negative but just realistic. Most of the so called "experts" are saying end of summer or early fall, 2021, before we might have "herd" ammunity which would allow some degree of return to normal. Lots of folks won't get the vaccine just because, for whatever the reason, they don't want a vaccine. So, it's going to take some time. In the meantime, do what you can to stay safe. Thanks for your comment.

  6. Hi John- The Spanish Flue took about 16,000 lives here in Australia. I'm concerned about a section of the populus who seem to think our present virus is some sort of hoax...how wrong. This Covid-19 is a killer. We're lucky being an Island where things can be managed. We're not in Lockdown as such though we do take all the necessary precautions as if we were in Lockdown. Best Wishes. KEV.
