9 Cards from a 1921 Set by F J Haynes

The "official photographer" of YNP was F J Haynes and in 1921 he published a set of cards known as the Vignette set of divided back cards. The dictionary defines "vignette" as a small illustration or portrait photograph that fades into its background without a definite border. The cards feature an artistic image in the middle of a card.  These were wonderfully produced by artists.  Take a look at the full card first and then a close-up of the image.

Electric Peak

Golden Gate Canyon

Grand Canyon from brink of Fall

Great Fall and Pt. Lookout

Great Fall

New Crater Geyser

Old Faithful Geyser

Punch Bowl Spring

Address side of all the above cards.
Note Domestic postage 1 cent, Foreign 2
These were called "divided back" cards
with a space on one half for the message
and the address on the other half.

Monday's cards are here.
Tuesday's cards are here.
Wednesday's cards are here.

  2. An interesting project next time you are visiting Yellowstone would be to take pictures with the same frame as the post cards. You would have a then and now picture. I would be especially interested in what Sheepeaters hill looks like today.
