Birds and Flowers -- First Day Issues [Part 15]

Greetings from Seattle. Today we are returning to our series of posts featuring the "Official Birds and Flowers of Our 50 States" as they appear on US Stamps and First Day of Issue Covers [1982]. We've had so many encouraging comments ... Thank you! We will wrap-up this series in the next few posts. For any of you who may be here for the first time, please take a moment to see the introduction, information about artists, and stamps, in our March 1, 2015, post.

Now, in alphabetical order, here are the next three States ...

Texas ... The Lone Star State ...

Texas -- Mockingbird and Bluebonnet

Utah ... The Beehive State ...

Utah -- California Gull and Sego Lily
Please don't ask us how Utah got away with using a "California" Gull! : - )

Vermont ... The Green Mountain State ...

Three more tomorrow and the last 2 on Wednesday.

Thank you for stopping by John's Island and a special thanks for all the kind comments on our attempt at Anni's Challenge ... and to Anni ... Thanks for the round of applause! : - )

  1. I don't know why they would choose ANY type of gull but a California one seems odd. I guessed it would be bluebonnets in Texas, though. I'm going to be sad when this is over. :-)

  2. It does seem odd that Utah's bird is a California gull. Hmmm.

  3. John, we are all anticipating the blooming of the blue bonnets here in Texas, and it may even happen yet this week. They are so beautiful covering the countryside, and folks come here to travel the back roads just to see them. I'll post a picture when they come out.

  4. Funny...that the UTAH bird is the CALIFORNIA gull. The mockingbirds here in Florida aren't as pretty as those in TX. :(

  8. They are all lovely, John! I have been to Vermont many times, but unfortunately haven't visited there in about two decades. I have many fond memories of the mountains, the little stores, the people and the lovely scenery.

  12. I think the California gull came just in time to eat up all the grasshoppers and save the first crop the LDS people sowed.

  14. The bluebonnets remind me of a song Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers sang in Rainbow Over Texas, "Texas U.S.A." "If you like bluebonnets bloomin' and a state where there's some room in, head out to Texas U.S.A..." I think it's on Youtube.

  15. A California Gull in Utah? Wow - now that gave me a good chuckle. I love the Mockingbirds - they are very active around here at the moment. One even is imitating the California Quails!
