From our collection ... More birds and flowers ... First Day Issues ... Please be sure to see the introduction, information about artists, and stamps, in our March 1, 2015, post. As you have noticed, we are posting the 50 States in alphabetical order, so if you've missed a state you want to see, please check the earlier posts.

Virginia ... The Commonwealth State ...

Finally, our home State, Washington ... The Evergreen State ...

West Virginia ... The Mountain State ...

Last two States tomorrow. Can you predict which bird will have been chosen the Official State Bird most often?

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. It's pretty obvious: the cardinal. And why not? It's a beautiful bird. I notice that nobody chose the cowbird. :-)

  2. Looks like the folks from Washington had good tastes; they chose Iowa's state bird ;)

  3. I find some of the state nicknames interesting, such as WV calling itself "The Mountain State" when there are way taller mountains in the Rockies and Virginia's "The Commonwealth State" when Massachusetts is a commonwealth too. :))

  4. More cardinals. Amazing how many of these had cardinals as their state bird, and I had no idea. These are so much fun to look at, John.

  8. I do think that the cardinal is probably the bird we see the most often on these first day issues. Unfortunately we don't see the real bird in our corner of the world. They are so cute.

And I guess the most has been the cardinal :))
