Cold River

The National Weather Service reports 9°F (-13°C) at this location in Southwest Montana this morning. At this temperature ice begins to form on the Madison River. The photo is from our 2006 archive.

Here in the USA we are experiencing our first winter blast over most of the country. Yesterday, it was colder in Texas than some parts of Alaska. We need to check the Old Farmer's Almanac to see what they are predicting for this winter, which is still, officially, over a month away.

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. Thanks for the information about the reason boats (and other loved things) are called "she" -- I learned quite a lot! And it was cold yesterday on our hike, but sunny and the wind didn't get to where we were. It was lovely! :-)

  3. Yup, cold in the Hill Country, but a few degrees higher than yesterday morning at 31 when I got up at 6:30. Warming trend on the way...if we can just get the sun to come out.

  5. I follow NWS Fairbanks on twitter. Yesterday they issued a warning that the temp would be 20 degrees above normal causing the snow to melt and refreeze on the roads.

  6. I'm your newest follower. Weather changed because a typhoon hit Alaska and so cold swept down to us causing snow and rain. Nice image you posted this week.

  7. Just found your blog and enjoyed my visit. We were in Seattle back in July where we departed for a cruise to Alaska. We loved Seattle!! It was our first time there and hopefully not our last. Yes the cold has definitely made it to our part of Southeast Texas!
