Enjoying the Dining Car

Here is an old postcard featuring the "City of Denver" Dining Car. Probably issued in the 1940s by the Union Pacific Railroad.

As is typical for these advertising cards, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. Note the gentlemen with coats and tie, real china, silverware, and cloth covered tables.

Thank you for stopping by John's Island.

  1. I never was on a train with a dining car like that. How things have changed in the present era. You're lucky to get a place to sit and then clean the plastic silverware up after yourself. :-)

  2. Oh, does that bring back a memory! Actually from my first cross country train ride, but also a couple of years back when my daughter and SIL decided my grandson needed a train experience. We took the train from San Antonio to Los Angeles to go to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm.

  3. It was definitely a different world back then. It's neat to see how everyone dressed and how the ladies wore their hair.

  4. a different era.

(i think the whistlers would stop in at the pond, but maybe not arrive like clockwork every morning for breakfast!)

  5. Seems like most people had more class back then. Now its jeans and t-shirt,bare tables and cheap dishes.

  6. Real silverware!

Now I'm wondering who washed all of it and where. Maybe they put it all in containers and took it off the train at the next station. Whew! Call me crazy, but paper plates work just fine. :)

Still, there is something really nice about the way things used to be. I bet travel like this was a real treat.

  7. I've always wonderful what it would be like to sit and eat in a dining car on a train. I finally had the experience and privilege on a train from Nairobi to Mombasa several years ago. It was a pleasant experience and though it isn't as grand as it once was, I could totally imagine the life way back when.

  8. Train travel, like air travel, is not what it once was, eh? Now the only way to experience elegant dining on a train is to take a specialty train ride that features a meal, such as the Napa Valley Wine Train. I'll be back to check out more of your wonderful memorabilia!
